How to Choose a Medal Display

Picking a medal display comes down to three things: the sport or activity, how many medals there are now (and how many are still to come), and where it will hang. Every display we make is handmade in Mountmellick, Co. Laois from 18mm wood, with free engraving on the nameplate.

2. Count the medals, then leave room to grow

Count the medals you have now, then think about the next few seasons. A young player or dancer will keep winning, so pick a display with spare hooks. As a rough rule:

  • Up to 15–17 medals: the Running Medal & Ribbon Display (15), Football Boot (17) or Crossed Hurls (17).
  • Around 20 medals: the Irish Dancing Dress, Music Note or Soccer Ball displays (20), or Gaelic Football (22).
  • 25 or more: the Sliotar, Football & Crossed Hurls, Jersey or Rugby Ball displays (25), or the Traditional Shield, which holds the most (29).
  • Too many for one display? You can hang two side by side, for example one for club medals and one for county or championship medals.

3. Choose a finish for the room

Most designs come in an oak-stained finish. The GAA sliotar and crossed hurls designs, the jersey, the football boot and the Irish dancing dress are also made in white. Oak suits a sitting room or hall; white tends to suit a bedroom or a brighter wall. Both are sprayed and sealed for a lasting satin finish, with gold-coloured hooks.

4. Decide what goes on the nameplate

Every display has a gold-finish nameplate with free engraving. Most people choose a name, a name and club, or a name and the years covered. We engrave exactly what you type, so check the spelling before you order.

Medal display, medal hanger or medal board: which do you need?

People use different names for the same thing. A medal hanger usually means a bar or cut-out shape with hooks, so the medals hang against the wall. A medal board or shield has a solid backing behind the medals, which frames them and keeps a big collection looking tidy. Medal holder and medal rack are general names for either.

Every display we make sits between the two: a solid piece of 18mm wood, cut in a shape that suits the sport, with gold-coloured hooks to hang the medals. For a classic medal board, the Traditional Medal Display Shield holds the most (29 medals). For a running medal hanger, the Running Medal & Ribbon Display holds 15 race medals. For a GAA player, the Sliotar and Football & Crossed Hurls displays work as a medal board for a whole career, with 25 hooks each.
